John and Diana Bowers are now getting over jet lag and already very involved in Germany, filling the leadership need for our team in and around Kandern. They will be spending significant periods of time there for probably at least a year, so it's necessary to somewhat settle in for these extended stays.

God has provided a good housing situation in a furnished apartment that can be rented as needed. The other need is for a vehicle. A good used car is available for sale, but they are $3000 short of funds to purchase it. If that is the vehicle they are meant to have, the transaction must be made soon.

A CALL TO STAND IN THE GAP

As we were celebrating the arrival of two couples this summer to the newly forming Proclaim team in Germany, we faced an unexpected challenge. Both the ministry director and the supervising director for that team experienced situations that will take them away from their leadership roles for an undetermined period of time.

Now reporting relationships to the three Proclaim co-directors have been adjusted and John Bowers is stepping in to maintain continuity in the leadership of this field, along with helping in a number of other projects in Europe and North Africa.

John and Diana leave on October 13 for their first period of several weeks in Germany. As they go there is still a need for funds for the unanticipated expenses of this new responsibility -- flights, a used vehicle and a studio apartment in Germany for this time. Please pray for them and for the needed resources as they go to stand in the gap.

VINCE COSTA'S "AMERICAN DREAM"

Proclaim's Vince Costa, from a Sicilian immigrant family, returned as a young man to spend his life ministering in his native land. Vince says,

As I share about salvation in Jesus Christ, people ask, "What are you doing here, why aren’t you enjoying America?" They look at me as one who had the great fortune to immigrate to America in the late 1950s walking away from the American dream. To them salvation (curing all of their ills) is seen as living the American dream. It does make for a good introduction in sharing of my life and the good news of Jesus Christ.

Sicily remains, as it has been for centuries, in a very strategic position for all sorts of military operations in the Mediterranean area. It is also a focal point for refugees coming across the sea from North Africa, fleeing war torn areas and persecution.

Recently volunteers from an evangelical church in one of those gateway towns welcomed and helped new arrivals, distributing Bibles in many languages. They also reached out to residents of the town distributing nearly 5,000 Italian Bibles or New Testaments door to door.

That is an example of the kinds of churches Vince and Cathy Costa are encouraging and helping as they teach, counsel, and mentor believers in Sicily and throughout the Mediterranean region.

NEW CD: THE TRUTH OF YOU -- Kim Peterson

Since the Petersons moved from Spain to the Proclaim ministry base in Jacksonville, FL, nearly 4 years ago, Kim has had a strong desire to support the church body with compositions to aid in worship and exhortation. He has had a lot of encouragement in this endeavor and requests for recordings of the music. Kim says:

Now, I have a compelling stirring in my soul to produce a CD of my compositions, most of which have been written specifically for worship since our arrival in North America in 2007. This stirring has been confirmed by the Proclaim International leaders and board members who are encouraging this desire and have approved a special recording project for my compositions. I’m calling the CD The Truth of You to reflect the teaching of Jesus in John 4 about the kind of worshipers that God seeks.

Jeremy Good, friend and frequent collaborator with Proclaim ministries, has agreed to partner with me as producer. He is a composer, keyboardist and worship leader at his church in Houston, Texas. He and other friends in Houston will play keyboard, guitar, drums and bass for me. I'll do horns and vocals in my Jacksonville studio. Recording is scheduled to begin late September. That means a trip to Houston.

To do all this I am asking for financial partnership from people who are interested in my ministry. Why do this CD? One of the blessings of recording and involving other musicians is to bring different shades and textures into my music; to connect with new circles of creativity. I am also hoping that this will help me find avenues to make my music available to other churches beyond our local fellowship.

This CD will also be useful in our Proclaim outreaches to other countries as this recording can be used to promote Proclaim concerts and in related television and radio interviews.

The project budget of $10,000 has been approved by Proclaim for me to raise for the five phases of production:

1) RECORDING 2) MIXING 3) MASTERING 4) ARTWORK 5) DUPLICATION

For stage one (Recording) I will need $1,500. That will cover my trip to Houston, the studio time and the musicians. And even though I may not have the grand total in project funds in hand prior to September, $1,500 will get me started. I believe I should proceed with this phase, trusting the Lord for it and for each phase as it comes.

A DAY IN THE LIFE ON THE ROAD

On your 2nd tour you have to play 2 instruments at once!

This guy might not look old enough to be a veteran, but Ryan Harbert from California has just done his 2nd Proclaim tour in Croatia -- the first was at age 17 in 2005! In between he has played for other events with Proclaim personnel in CA. Here is his take on tour experience:

WAKE UP

Usually this part happens way too soon and much against my will, but there’s not much we can do about that. Sometimes coffee is ready, sometimes it’s not an option. In either case, the first goal is to try and pronounce the name of the town I’m in. If not pronounce it, at least remember it.

Breakfast

Bread, coffee, cheese, most of the time in any particular order.

Idemo

[EE-de-mo]. Literally: “Let’s go.” Of course, it always takes three idemo‘s to actually leave. the first one is like a gentle reminder that we should get moving. Nobody flinches from their breakfast. The second comes about 10 minutes later, where people get up and put their things together. But when you hear the third idemo, it’s really time to get in the car. This phenomonon was constistant through my entire trip, by the way. No matter the occasion, there were always three idemo‘s.

Drive

An hour on the road would be a blessing. Two or three were the norm, with the longest being nine. You become very close to your seatmates and learn lots of interesting things about them. Some of which you would rather not know.

Set up

We have one large maxi-van full of equipment and a total of zero roadies to set it up. That means if it’s going to be done, we are going to do it. Somehow, the weather always managed to be between 35-40°C (for those unfamiliar with the metric system, it’s roughly between hot and really hot). When we started, this was a two hour process, but we got it down to a really smooth and casual two hours by the end of the tour.

Play

The most fun part of the day. Time to rock out with the best musicians in the area and have an awesome jam session for an hour and a half, all while singing about God and preaching His word to people. Could you ask for anything more than that?

Tear down

Self explanatory. Like set up, but less hot and a lot more tired. On a good night, we would be packed before midnight and headed to dinner, or just our sleeping quarters for the night. Sometimes there was post show beer, sometimes people fell asleep in the car on the way to our host family’s house. Every night was exausting one way or another.

Sleep

In over two weeks of touring, not once did anyone have a problem falling asleep. The only real problem was waking up the next morning to do it all over again.

Lather, rinse (if you’re lucky), repeat.

POLAND TOUR WRAP UP

Proclaim’s Writing on the Wall band partnered with a national Polish organization in July for evangelistic outreach in two cities in Poland. Band leader Russ Speiser talks about how God worked in spite of challenges:

A major hurdle was the weather. Our concerts were outdoors and it rained every day. Not only does this make it difficult to set up, as the rain can damage our equipment, but, more importantly, people will stay indoors when it's cold and rainy. In the end, we only had to cancel two concerts, but really each one was threatened.

Even with the uncertainty and challenging setups, God used the ministry in very significant ways. There were many conversations afterwards, and we know of at least three people that made a decision to follow Jesus. There were also many new contacts made for the local churches. In one town a closing event at the church provided a natural link with new contacts. At the church of about 50-60, there were 15 people who were new to the pastor! There were also valuable relationships formed with civic officials in both cities and, from what we saw and heard, there are some excellent possibilities for this national movement to continue to grow.

PROCLAIM! POLAND -- RECAP OF TOUR WEEK 1

Sunday we completed week 1 of the Writing on the Wall tour in Poland with a really great team that is serving very well together through some serious challenges. We have been partnering with a national group that demonstrates their faith through practical community work in various areas around the city. We've led worship several times in the church and at a related local camp where the larger international team is housed, done a "private" concert at the camp, and two public concerts on a great location on a pier in the middle of the city.

Saturday's concert was to have been the grand finale concert by Writing on the Wall. Unfortunately the weather has been unseasonably cold through much of Europe, and with drizzle, and temperatures hovering around 12-14 degrees in this area of Poland, we were forced to cancel this event. There have been many good conversations and some decisions made during this first week, and we feel we have encouraged and ministered to the local church and camp.

Sunday we joined with the church worship team for the morning service, and then in the evening had a special "Bridge" event with some of the band songs, testimonies, and some songs with the worship team to provide a natural way for interested contacts from the week's outreach to meet and get involved with the local church.

Now on to a second town for our final week of the tour, participating with a national host ministry there. We are missing our tour organizer Bob Johnson who had to leave the tour after the first few days because of a medical emergency. We are very thankful for his faithfulness, vision and creativity in setting up this tour and developing these partnerships. Thanks for your prayers as Writing on the Wall continues this tour to Aug. 1st.

POLAND MID-TOUR UPDATE: TEAM MEMBER MISSY

I've been in Poland now for a little over a week. I might finally be over jet lag and the tour is finally getting going after practices. This tour is drastically different than the tour I went on in Albania.
We have been in the same place since we all arrived to Poland. It is nice to sleep in the same bed every night. We have partnered with an organization that brings in teams from all over Poland, Europe, and the U.S. to do service projects in the community. We were using their chapel for practice, so our guys volunteered to serve as the worship band on Sunday. It was great being able to worship with so many different languages in the room. We did our first concert for them, then went to a nearby lake and did a concert there Thursday night and Friday night.

We will go back there tonight for another concert. It's a public, outdoor venue, so it's hard to be able to get people to engage in discussion afterwards since they just continue to wherever or whatever they were doing before. However, I have already seen God do great things with the testimonies of the bandmembers from the stage.

Both nights at the pier the weather has been predicted to be awful, but it has been beautiful. This means either 1) meteorologists in Poland are just as bad as the ones in the states, or 2) our God is greater than the weather. Please pray for tonight as we will be out doing our biggest concert in this location.

There is a very diverse and international group of people on this tour. We have Australians, a Frenchman, and Englishman, a Frenglish-American (she's English-American, but lives in France...and is also my roomie), 6 Americans, a German, and 3 Canadians. Even with our cultural differences, languages, and backgrounds, God has united us and used us.

WRITING ON THE WALL IN POLAND JULY 14-30

Proclaim’s band Writing on the Wall is in Poland July 14-30 partnering with a movement developed by 3 young Polish leaders. The national team selects three small to mid-sized cities in which to help the local churches with a week-long intensive, multi-faceted campaign to serve their city. They recruit 100-200 volunteers — some coming from Europe and North America, but the majority from Polish churches in other cities. An an important goal of the campaign, in addition to the service performed by the team, is to kindle a passion for missions and service in the hearts of these Polish believers.

Many evangelical churches here are conservative in their church culture and practices, and resistant to changing their traditions. Yet a new generation of evangelical churches has emerged that is breaking away from the traditional ways. It is with two such churches we are partnering in two cities in northern Poland.

EVANGELISM IN CROATIA & BOSNIA JULY 2011

Update 7/17 -
Praise God for helping the team end well and for using them to reach the lost and encourage believers in Croatia and Bosnia. A missionary in Croatia reports on Adonai's ministry:
Just last weekend we had two evangelistic concerts in Nova Gradiska and one in Slavonski Brod. The musicians are top-notch, and they hang around and talk with their listeners until midnight or after. We know of one lady who accepted Christ after a long talk with Diana [vocalist]. Pray for this new believer, a wife and mother of adult children, as she grows in her relationship with the Lord. Pray that she will truly get connected with the church in Brod and be discipled.

Encouraging and Supporting North African Christians

Russ and Marj Speiser, Proclaim members from Canada, lead our team in France, but their ministry has an impact all across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Their gifts in technology and the arts come together to provide a variety of valuable resources.

On their website they share an exciting report on the recent 2011 gathering of North African Christians at a bi-annual conference in which they have been involved since it began in 2005. The event has been gaining momentum and the one this year was a particularly effective cooperative effort and a catalyst to provide increased ministry resources for reaching out to troubled areas of North Africa. GOD'S TIMING IS PERFECT

Our team in Germany is finally able to prepare for receiving two more long-awaited Proclaim families.

Steve and Dawn Liberti in California have been preparing for this ministry and raising support for over 3 years. Now they are able to leave for Germany this month with their two young daughters to begin language study and life in Germany as part of the Proclaim team.

Greg and Becky Davis completed their first term with Proclaim in Germany 2 years ago and relocated in Jacksonville for their home ministry period a few months before their 3rd child was born. Now they are packing up their 2 teens and a toddler to head back out returning to Proclaim in Germany by August!

How is it that in a 12-month period of monumental financial crisis that has shut down businesses and organizations and brought significant challenges to the work of Proclaim, we have had 3 families funded sufficiently to get back to their overseas ministries? Because God loves to prove that his resources are boundless and that he is not at all limited by earthly economy.

Both of these couples have been faithfully using their gifts in ministry where they have opportunity -- serving, encouraging and challenging people, sharing the gospel on Proclaim evangelism teams and in local ministry settings, . . . and growing through this faith-building experience.

AND NOW IT IS TIME!

NEW CHURCH IN LIMA, PERU

For 12 years Rino Beretta, leader of the Proclaim!-Peru team, along with others, has had the vision to start a new church in Lima. By last year they began to strongly sense that it was time to act on this calling. That was confirmed as a committed group of 10 began 2011 with a day of prayer and fasting. On January 16 they met for their first service in the home of a Proclaim team couple. They expected to start with 17 people – but 25 adults and 3 children showed up! By the second week they added a Sunday school and had 29 adults and 6 children.

Rino recently reported that the church is still growing, now averaging 50 people. They quickly outgrew the home and began renting space in a hotel. And they have already added a Saturday Kids’ Club to their weekly events. The church is a natural outgrowth of the ministry this team has had for years doing evangelism through mime and drama in increasingly high profile venues throughout the city of Lima and beyond. God is blessing and confirming that this direction is truly from him.

PROCLAIM GALA 2011 IN JACKSONVILLE

The focus of our Gala in Jacksonville on April 9 was rejoicing in the growing team and strategic ministry at our base in Germany.

And the team is growing . . .

We announced that evening that Steve and Dawn Liberti, after 3 years of preparation and support raising, have just been freed to leave for Germany in June to begin their first term with Proclaim!

Susi Hagen, from Germany, joined Next Exit as guest muscian. Susi has served with Proclaim on several international tours and is very involved in local ministries with our team in Germany.

Speaker Bob Johnson, Proclaim! Co-Director, shared many other exciting current challenges and prospective opportunities as God is deepening ongoing ministry partnerships and opening doors in new areas all over the world. Along with those opportunities come increased challenges for resources. We are thankful for the encouraging responses at the Gala and for all who faithfully have an ongoing part in supplying the provision.

Interesting Connection in Ukraine

The two final concerts of our Next Exit team were in Kiev, completing a connection that was started in 2004 on a tour in Kyrgystan in Central Asia. Our main contact and set-up person for that tour did an excellent job. In one concert in the capital city of Bishkek, where the goal was to start a new church, of the 300 attending the concert 50 new believers or seekers from the concert showed up the next Sunday and the church was launched!

That missionary and his family are now in ministry in Kiev and through Facebook learned about our tour in this area. He contacted us and we now have had the privilege of doing two concerts in support of this new ministry!

BELARUS AND UKRAINE WITH SPASENIE 2011

February 21-March 6 Proclaim's band Next Exit worked with Belarusian Christian band Spasenie to Proclaim Christ in Belarus and Ukraine. There was no chance to get bored! Spasenie makes use of innovative means of connecting with people for sharing their faith, and our team experienced that diversity of ministry opportunities.

BELARUS

Spasenie's concern for youth and the reputation they have in schools opened doors for our band to play in some of the schools and speak with students. They are the first American band to have this opportunity, and their efforts were enthusiastically received by teachers and administration.

Tech Greg worked with Spasenie in their music studio and taught an audio class in their music academy. Several members taught classes helping musicians and techs improve their skills and expand their understanding.

Team members John, Greg and Anne helped judge 30 bands, performing 2 songs each, competing to play in a music festival.

At the Saturday Music Festival the 6 finalists were featured with Next Exit performing at the end. All students at the public school performances were invited to this event.

At a music college where Spasenie and Next Exit performed together, the students loved the concert and many stayed after to talk.

The time in Belarus finished with a concert in church that is small but very strategic with a history of launching many other ministry ventures.

UKRAINE

The final days of the tour were in Kiev, Ukraine. The two bands joined together leading worship at church services and had some more teaching opportunities.

Praise God for the opportunities in these venues to encourage believers and engage with unbelievers to build bridges and share. Praise for the endurance that God gave the team to continue strong to the end.

2010 Year End Letter from John Bowers, Proclaim President

Dear friends,
I know of no greater or more gracious encouragement than to be used by God to bring to people the good news of salvation – to influence a person’s eternal destiny. As our staff in Proclaim serves Christ, we are pouring ourselves into others, individually and as teams, reaching people with the gospel. We recently finished one of this year’s major outreach projects, an evangelistic tour in Albania. I would like to share with you a letter of thanks from Ylli Doci, the leader of Campus Crusade’s work there.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On behalf of the entire Campus Crusade for Christ Albania ministry, we would like thank you for your tireless effort and seemingly endless energy invested here in our ministry, coming alongside our campus teams in outreach as we launch our focus in fulfilling our vision that by the year 2020 every Albanian will know someone who truly follows Christ.

Many lives have already been changed as a result of your concerts and conversations, and we are certain that many more are to be changed through follow up in the coming weeks and months. We are extremely grateful for the time, energy and finances that you put into these outreaches and consider it a privilege to be co-laborers in the harvest with you. Thank you for your wonderful partnership!

Please don’t miss the significance of the WONDERFUL PARTNERSHIP in which you have a vital part. WE are able to go share our lives, our talents, our energy and our ministry experience, laboring with these faithful workers, because YOU provide the finances and the covering of prayer that makes it possible for us to go.

And our need for financial help continues to be a pressing issue. We need your help. While ministry opportunities have grown, giving to Proclaim’s General Fund has diminished significantly over the past two years. In spite of budget cutbacks and foregoing purchases of approved projects, we are in a serious deficit of $40,000 in our General Fund. We have also had some unexpected and unbudgeted expenses, like the IRS challenge of our status as a Missions Organization. We incurred expenses of over $10,000 in legal fees to re-establish this standing which was already obvious and true.

We have not yet had to say no to any ministry opportunity because we lack funding, but that unhappy prospect is looming. We feel called to spiritually needy places, and these places are usually economically challenged. National ministries and missionaries in places like the Balkans, Eastern Europe, North Africa, Asia Minor and South America, request our help, but cannot cover the costs of training nationals and bringing in our teams for evangelistic projects.

In Psalm 4:1 David says:
Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have relieved me in my distress;
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

The phrase, you have relieved me in my distress, literally means: you have given me ample space when I was in a tight place. Will you call with us to our righteous God – we are in a tight place and we need His deliverance.
